Allscripts History

Founded in 1986, Allscripts Healthcare Solutions began as a provider of prepackaged medications that physicians could dispense to patients at the point of care. In 1997, Glen Tullman led a team of investors, including Morgan Stanley Venture Partners, who purchased a majority position in Allscripts. With the arrival of Mr. Tullman as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Allscripts refocused its efforts on developing healthcare information technology tools with a focus on medication management, leading to the 1998 introduction of an innovative electronic prescribing solution.

Through a series of acquisitions, Allscripts bolstered its clinical solutions with an eye toward creating a physician-focused ambulatory Electronic Medical Record.

In 2001, Allscripts acquired Channelhealth from IDX, securing a 10-year strategic alliance to become the exclusive provider of point-of-care clinical solutions to the IDX customer base. The alliance with IDX proved to be a competitive advantage, allowing Allscripts to gain significant traction with its TouchWorks Electronic Health Record, designed for large academic medical centers, integrated delivery networks and multi-specialty physician practices.

In 2006, Allscripts acquired A4 Health Systems, adding the award-winning HealthMatics Electronic Health Record that was focused on small to mid-size physician practices and independent physician groups.  With the acquisition of A4, Allscripts also entered the practice management market, and gained a major foothold in the hospital market with the addition of both care management and Emergency Department information systems.

Nearly two years later, Allscripts acquired Extended Care Information Network and merged its care management and discharge management products with Canopy to create the Allscripts Care Management offering.
